Beaches

Ayamonte is traditionally known for its exquisite climate and its seven kilometre long paradise beach of fine golden sands bathed by the Atlantic . Surrounded by dunes, there is direct access to the beach with parking facilities just five minutes from the main beach area. At high tide, the beach can reach an average width of 60 metres while the immense sea, of deep blue color and gentle swell, reaches temperatures of over 21º in the summer. But the most impressive feature of Ayamonte is its incomparable light, an unmistakeable tone of the horizon over the Ocean, with more than 3000 hours of light per year in a climate of dry hot summers and mild winters.

The Guadiana River

The river Guadiana has always been the gate to neighbouring countries. With endless backgrounds of beautiful landscapes, the river flows along the border between Spain and Portugal . Along its banks, we find hills covered by forests of incomparable beauty, which were once silent witnesses to the transport of minerals from Portuguese and Spanish mines such us Pomarao and Puerto la Laja, now abandoned. Its silent waters bathe idyllic towns that seem closer to fiction than to reality: Alcautin, Sanlúcar del Guadiana, Mértola… The river Guadiana is an ideal habitat, the romantic route of seafarers, adventurers and dreamers, with countless spots inviting one to just sit and take in the Andalucian splendour.

Protected Spaces

The environment in Ayamonte has been preserved by town planners. Natural areas of inestimable value have been protected thanks to a process of sustained development and responsible environmental management. The mouth of the rivers Carrera and Guadiana cover an area of more than 2000 hectares of marisma (marshlands), full of estuaries and channels that, combined with vast areas of salt marshes, generate an ecosystem rich in wildlife and flora. Species like the flamingo, the spoonbill and the cormorant can be seen here as well as molluscs and peculiar types of fish.
